Three Canterbury Families

Profiles & Occupations

.

Below the lives of three of Jean THEVELIN's grandchildren are compared. There are noticeable differences in the surname spellings, in infant mortality and the churches their families used.

Jacob[4], the only one born in England, uses a surname spelt most like the current spelling. That used by Isaac[2], who moved to England as a youth of 12 and whose wife was born in Guines, used a spelling that retains a strong "soundalike" to the French THEVELIN.

Knowledge of occupations is thin but we do know that Jacob[4] became a weaver apprentice to Abraham CANTER . (record in Court Book of Weaver's Company of London 1711 when aged 15.)
