Freemen of Canterbury
The succession of TEVELEIN Freemen of Canterbury appears to have started with the marriage of Isaac[3] into the PICARD family. Ann's father and her grandfather, Richard Jenkinson, were both grocers. Her father was also a hop-merchant and Alderman
What is odd is that, whereas it has been generally held that Louis THEVELIN was a Freeman of Canterbury, there is no reference in Cowper's "Works Relating to Canterbury 1392-1800", where the Freeman's list is to be found, of any record of Louis being one. I am told he certainly demanded frequently to be made one.
There are five groups of freemen: those who obtained freedom after serving out an apprenticeship to a freeman (A); the children of freemen (B); those who married a freeman's daughter; (M) those who claimed freedom by 'redemption', i. e. by purchase (R); and those who were honoured by a gift of the freedom from the Mayor and Court of Aldermen (H). Cowper published his lists divided into the five categories.
